Dave Alnwick: Exceptional Magic 4* (Edinburgh Free Fringe Review)

Canons’ Gait Bar – Cellar Bar

Know Before You Go: Be prepared to volunteer (I did and it was great fun)

David Alnwick’s Exceptional Magic on the PBH’s Free Fringe is magic done right. This show was everything that a free magic show should have been. I found myself with a spare hour and wandered in to be greeted with perplexing, wonderful, and disconcerting mind games and tricks that had my brow furrowed for the rest of the evening.

Dave Alnwick

The audience was completely engaged and, at times, it felt like a stand-up performance and magic rolled into one. This wasn’t big and bold magic but it was close up, clever, and enthralling. Alnwick talks you through his tricks so you almost feel that you understand until the very last moment where you are completely taken by surprise.

It is worth remembering that there is a free fringe that runs during August and this show was a welcome reminder that free entry does not, by any means, determine the quality of the performance.

Wander in, grab a drink and make a donation on the way out to keep the free fringe going.
